Hybrid vehicles like the Toyota Aqua and Honda Fit are becoming the standard for city driving in Nairobi and Mombasa due to their incredible fuel economy. However, many owners treat them like regular petrol cars, which can lead to expensive hybrid battery failures.

The Hybrid Battery Cooling Fan

The number one cause of hybrid battery failure in Kenya is dust. The cooling fan (usually located under the rear seat) sucks in dust and hair, which clogs the filter. If the battery overheats, its lifespan is halved. Clean this filter every 10,000km.

Inverter Cooling System

Hybrids have two separate cooling systems: one for the engine and one for the inverter. Ensure you use only SLLC (Super Long Life Coolant). Never mix it with water, as this will lead to corrosion in the high-voltage electronics.
