The Toyota Corolla Fielder is ubiquitous on Kenyan roads for a reason: it is reliable, spacious, and fuel-efficient. However, even the most robust machine requires specialized care to survive the unique conditions of our terrain and climate.

1. CVT Fluid: The Silent Killer

Most modern Fielders use a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Unlike traditional automatic gearboxes, CVTs are highly sensitive to fluid quality. We recommend changing your CVT fluid every 40,000km using only genuine Toyota FE fluid. Failure to do so leads to the dreaded "judder" and eventual transmission failure.

2. Cooling System and the Water Pump

The 1NZ-FE and 2ZR-FAE engines found in these cars are prone to water pump leaks after 100,000km. Check for pinkish crusty residue around the engine bay. Replacing a Ksh 5,000 water pump today saves you from a Ksh 80,000 engine overhaul tomorrow.

3. Suspension in the Land of Potholes

Given the heavy loads often carried in wagons, the rear shocks and bushings take a beating. Listen for clunking sounds when driving over bumps. Using heavy-duty (HD) coil springs can help if you frequently transport cargo, but ensure they don't compromise your braking stability.
